Does social convention have any place in politics or ethics?

Every culture has its social conventions. Are they worthy of respect? Might be worthwhile to sometimes "go along to get along," even if that conflicts with rational ethical principles? Might social convention sometimes influence rights? Would that amount to social contract theory? If so, is that a problem?

Here's the original question: How would you describe the relationship between social contract and social convention? Objectivism seems to oppose the social contract theory, what about social convention? Especially in instances where such conventions conflict with objectivist ethics. Should an individual who follows Objectivist standards respond to a conflicting social norm, however trivial it may be? Or is it sometimes advisable to “go along to get along”?
