Should abortion be left to the states?

Many people -- some for abortion rights and some against abortion rights -- think that abortion laws should be decided by each state, rather than dictated by the federal government. People mostly argue for that view on the grounds that the right to abortion is not mentioned in the Constitution. I've also seen someone argue that since murder is defined by state law, whether abortions are deemed murder or not should be a matter of state law. What would result from allowing states to decide abortion law? Would that be the right approach?

Before the Roe versus Wade decision of January 1973, each state legislature did decide separately whether to allow abortions. A pregnant teenager in a state that didn't allow them might confidentially apply for help from Planned Parenthood, get dropped off as usual at school one morning by her unsuspecting parents, meet a contact from said organization who would drive her to the airport and give her a round-trip ticket to another state, where she would get an abortion and be back in time to meet her parents picking her up after school. Things like that happened. So did back-alley stuff with coathangers.
