Is it wrong for an atheist to pray?

I used to be a Christian, but I've not believed in God for many years. However, I still pray when I'm under stress, even though I know that it doesn't accomplish anything. What's the harm in praying to a non-existent being?

George Santayana, in his book "Reason in Religion" mentions that to pray is a good way to focus in on your highest values. "...to contrast eloquently the given with the ideal situation, is certainly as likely a way of bringing about a change for the better as it would be to chastise one's self severely,.."

Seems to me it could be done as a dramatic soliloquy, especially if one has a developed routine about it that can be exploited.
