Many people claim that their Christian faith is compatible with science and reason. Why do they say that? Are they wrong? How should a person fully committed to reason reply?

No, reason is that faculty which identifies and integrates the materials provided by the senses. Faith is a supposed faculty by which something is or can be known by some non-sensory means--i.e., in the absence of evidence.
