Objectivist or not, one would be quite gauche to attempt to fĂȘte oneself on the occasion of the anniversary of one's birth. Consummate American etiquette doyenne Miss Manners agrees: People who throw parties for themselves for engagements, marriages, birthdays & the like risk appearing as though they are demanding adulation (and, usually, a "gift"), rather than earning it. If the event is worth celebrating, one's friends and loved ones will choose to honor it on their own.
THAT is the point of the birthday!!! The point is that it is the ONE day our culture says its okay to fete yourself! It is a celebration of one's own existence as such! What day could be better? I have always thought my birthday is the best day of the year because it stands for the beginning of my existence and my existence is the best thing that has ever happened to me! What day in my life could possibly demand more of my love and celebration?! Of course I only want people to come to spend the day with me and/or bring gifts if they selfishly want to, but I see no problem at all with wanting to celebrate the shit out of the best day of every year!
